How cute are these mason jars?? I am obsessed with mason jars, my family uses jars to drink out of! One day when I was at Michael's I saw that the mason jars were on sale and I just had to get them for my makeup brushes. They sat on my dresser for months all sad and colorless unfortunately. But, alas! No more! I had seen pictures of do it yourself distressed mason jars and I just had to try it for myself. I love the old, work out look of them. I also love that they are matte! They were so simple to do too!
You will need:
*some mason jars (or any glass jars would work!) I got mine at Michael's on sale for 2/$3!
* some acrylic paint ( I just rummaged through my mom's stash and found colors that matched my room)
* a paint brush or a paint brush sponge thing
* sand paper
* some tunes
* a little bit of patience
1. Paint those jars! You will probably need to do more than one coat so do a thin coat! I used a paint brush and it left strokes on the first coat, but they went away on the second coat!
2. Let the jars dry! Completely! I let them dry upside down to avoid messing up the paint as little as possible. I figured that I was going to distress the top anyway so if some of the paint was missing it would be fine.
3. While you let the paint dry go do something! Like enjoying a nice glass of homemade Passion Fruit Tazo Tea Lemonade (that yummy drink from Starbucks)! Or something that will take you a little while. You want the paint to dry COMPLETELY before you put another coat of paint on it.
I didn't let the paint dry totally in some places (mostly the edges or around the letters) and when I went to put the second coat of paint on there it took the first coat off! I decided to just go with it though, and it turned out fine!
4. After those jars are dryyyy (I did this step the next morning, I started this project pretty late in the evening) start sanding! I started sanding with fine sandpaper on the letters, just carefully taking the paint off of the raised parts. I also sanded the ridges on the top (where the lid screws on) for some balance. I sanded that little bit that was missing paint too!
5. Put your makeup brushes (or whatever you want to store in them) in there and admire your gorgeous new jars! Aren't they pretty? I kind of want to get more jars and try it with some pretty metallic silver paint! How fabulous would that look?
I am suuuper happy with how they turned out! They look so cute on my dresser! If you distress your own jars I would love to see what colors you use and how you use them! I love mason jars and I will definitely be doing some more things with them!
